The large-scale production of biofuels from algae is not viable with existing technologies, says a report from the National Research Council of the U.S. National Academies published in October. The authors base their findings on water, energy and nutrients needed to grow and harvest enough algae to meet 5% of U.S. transportation fuel needs.
