One of the candidates for the People's Power Party (PPP) team contesting in Ang Mo Kio GRC was previously jailed for a road rage incident.

According toShin Min Daily News, 34-year-old Samuel Lee was charged with two counts of reckless behaviour endangering the lives of others and sentenced to six weeks in prison in June 2024.

The incident occurred in February 2022, at a pedestrian crossing near Victory Family Centre's technical support centre in Toa Payoh, according to The Straits Times.

In response to media queries, the secretary-general of the PPP, Goh Meng Seng, said he was aware of Lee's past and had not been kept in the dark about it.

He added that Lee had not been involved in an affair, lying in parliament, fraud, or a breach of trust case.

Goh pointed out that these matters involved the issue of credibility.

He reiterated, "(Lee) is not killing people or starting fires, neither has he cheated people, nor lied, nor lied in parliament."

What happened in February 2022?

Lee was driving along Lorong 4 Toa Payoh on Feb. 2, 2022, when he encountered a food delivery rider on a bicycle.

While the rider was crossing the road at a pedestrian crossing, Lee did not give way and nearly hit the rider.

The rider was furious and chased after Lee's car to demand an explanation.

He also yelled and cursed at Lee, which prompted Lee to call the police.

While waiting for the police, Lee became more and more angry with the rider who continued to shout and curse, and decided to scare him away by driving his car forward.

Lee then drove his car towards the rider twice, who was able to dodge it.

Lee also knocked down the gate of the centre in the process.

Did not show remorse during proceedings

During his sentencing, Lee asked for a short-term detention.

In response, the judge said short-term detention was for defendants with reform potential.

However, in Lee's case, the judge highlighted his denial of his crime, his lack of remorse, and how he had blamed the rider, the police and even reporters throughout the legal process.

Apart from being jailed for six weeks, Lee was also banned from driving for six months.

Goh: Lee's experience can be used as teaching material for the Yellow Ribbon project

Goh was further quoted byShin Min as saying that Lee's experience could be used as teaching material for the Yellow Ribbon project.

He added that he did not believe Lee's case would affect the election.

"I don't think it's a very significant issue. If that were the case, the Yellow Ribbon project would not be necessary," he said.

On Apr. 25 evening, PPP also released a statement on its Facebook page.

Lee is still eligible to run for election.

According to the Elections Department Singapore (ELD), a person convicted of multiple offences, with a sentence imposed for each not exceeding a year of imprisonment or a fine of S$10,000, will not be disqualified from being a Member of Parliament (MP).
